The New Zealand Waterfront Workers' Union has told Ports of Auckland (NZSE: POA) that it plans to strike for two days next week.

The strike is due to take place from 6.30 am on Thursday 27 September until 6.30 am on Saturday 29 September.

POA boss Geoff Vazey has expressed his disappointment at the proposed action.

"We believed we had an agreement with the union in July. Since then we have had ongoing talks under the guidance of an industrial mediator to settle the detail."

Mr Vazey says POA subsequently presented a further comprehensive settlement package to the union, including a wage hike.

"In spite of all indications from union officials that the proposed agreement was acceptable, the settlement was rejected by union members at a ratification meeting. The union is now seeking to reintroduced a range of additional issues into the negotiations and has followed this with a notice of strike action."

Mr Vazey says talks with the union are continuing and the company will be working hard to resolve the outstanding issues through mediation.
