Contrary to Jack's statement of "Fact", a significant amount of money has been invested by the industry on new generation since 2001 - Gas: Huntly e3P, Huntly P40, Stratford Peaker, Wind: Tararua Stages 2 and 3, Te Apiti, West Wind, White Hill, Te Rere Hau, Geothermal: Nga Awa Purua, Kawerau, Mokai extensions. These collectively add up to several billion dollars of investment. Not to mention a lot of other projects that could have been built were it not for the ponderously slow Resource Management Act.

The Fact is that a Massive Amount of money has been extracted from Electricity and a very small amount of the Profits have been spent on new Generation. Fortunately for us, the NZ Government Coffers have been the recipient of most of these profits. But Publicly listed Energy Companies like Contact Energy--have aquired a large Off-Shore shareholder like Origin Energy of Australia, who bring little benefit except to extract profits. Origin Energy-Australia would see Contact as a vehicle to print money for them, and I doubt would run the company to benefit New Zealand. The Over-Pricing of the Electricity has made New Zealand companies and manufacturers less compeditive as they have had to bare larger than Normal electricity bills and so have less money to spend on developing or growing their core business. The domestic consumer would also have been able to place the saved money in better directions.
